Trollfjord is the destination visited by the greatest number of tourists in Lofoten during the summer. The fjord is a branch of the Raftsundet strait and is located at the easternmost part of Lofoten on Austvågøya. The fjord is 2 km long and only 100 metres wide at its entrance, surrounded by mountain walls rising up to 1,000 metres directly from the water.

Trollfjord is widely known for the Battle of Trollfjord, a significant event in Northern Norwegian fishing history. The event was immortalized in Johan Bojer’s novel The Last Viking and in one of the major works of painter Gunnar Berg.

Gunnar Berg, from Svolvær, is regarded as one of Northern Norway’s most important painters. His painting of the Battle of Trollfjord, depicting fishermen in traditional Nordland boats confronting the steamships of the wealthy fishing operators in the narrow fjord, is his most famous work. The painting can be viewed at Galleri Gunnar Berg on Svinøya.
