About this experience

Discover Trollfjorden from Svolvær with Alea of Lofoten

Trollfjorden is one of the narrowest fjords in Lofoten – at its tightest just a hundred metres wide – with mountain walls rising more than a thousand metres straight up from the water. The tour goes by boat from Svolvær and takes you into this terrain.

The fjord is a permanent habitat for the white-tailed eagle, Northern Europe's largest bird of prey with a wingspan of up to 2.65 metres. The guides feed them with fish along the way, giving you a good chance to see them up close.

Trollfjorden also has a concrete place in Norwegian fishing history. In 1890, a battle took place here between steamships and open rowboats – the so-called Battle of Trollfjorden – a conflict over fishing rights that left a lasting mark on North Norwegian culture. Johan Bojer drew direct inspiration from it for his novel The Last Viking, and the painter Gunnar Berg documented the event on canvas.

The guides on the tour are local and know the area well. They share stories stretching from the Viking Age to today's fishing traditions – context that gives the fjord a layer beyond the purely visual.
