About this experience
Six apartments on the quay in Værøy harbour, run by a local family since 2020. Wake up to the sea and the mountains, paddle out from the harbour, and finish the day in a floating sauna with a cold plunge off the dock.
Bensvik Brygge sits on the second floor of a fishing quay in Værøy harbour, in Sørland — the small village that anchors this island between Moskenes and Røst. Kent and Trine, who opened the place in the summer of 2020, host guests across six units with 26 beds between them, from a simple double room to a two-storey apartment that sleeps nine.
Every apartment but the double room comes with a full kitchen — stovetop, oven, kettle, fridge, dishwasher — and its own balcony facing the harbour and the mountains behind it. Linens, towels, and final cleaning are included in the price, and Kent and Trine keep board games, cards, and a small library of books on hand for evenings when the weather turns. A washing machine is available in the larger units, and a baby travel cot can be arranged on request. There's no breakfast or food service, so guests cook for themselves or head into Sørland.
Down on the water, a floating sauna and a stretch of cold, clear sea make up the daily ritual here — sauna, then straight into the fjord. Kayaks are available for rent by the day, single or double, weather permitting; you'll need a paddling certificate or solid prior experience, since the sea around Værøy can turn quickly. From the water, or from a kayak, it's possible to watch sea eagles and cormorants work the cliffs while seals surface nearby.
Værøy itself rewards people willing to go a little further than the Lofoten mainland. The trail up Håheia climbs to a view over the Lofoten Wall and Vestfjorden, passing above the abandoned village of Måstad, once home to trained puffin-hunting dogs. Puinn beach, tucked beneath steep cliffs on the island's far side, has been named among the most beautiful beaches in the world. Stockfish still hangs on wooden racks through the winter, produced here for export to Italy — a trade that goes back centuries and made Venice, improbably, Værøy's twin city.
Getting here is part of the experience: the ferry runs daily from Bodø, and from Moskenes in summer, or you can fly in on the world's northernmost scheduled helicopter route from Bodø Airport. Either way, Bensvik Brygge is a short walk from the quay — a base for exploring an island that's still genuinely out of the way.
