About this experience
Northern Explorer has been running guided tours in Lofoten for over 12 years. They operate across both seasons — summer brings midnight sun kayaking and multi-day treks through the archipelago; winter means snowshoeing along ridgelines or paddling as the northern lights move overhead.
Northern Explorer runs guided outdoor tours out of Lofoten year-round. The company has been at it for over 12 years — long enough to know which routes hold up in shifting weather, and which corners of the archipelago most visitors never reach.
In summer, the options open up considerably. Half-day and full-day kayak tours take you between the islands, where the water is sheltered and the light stays well past midnight. For those with more time, the multi-day programs combine kayaking with trekking and rappel — covering terrain you simply can't reach on a day trip. There are also fishing tours, including the Midnight Sun Fish and Grill, which does exactly what it sounds like.
Winter is quieter, but for many the better season. The Northern Lights kayaking tour is one of their signature experiences: on the water as the aurora shifts overhead, with the mountains of Moskenesøy framing the horizon. Snowshoe tours follow ridgelines above the fishing villages, giving you a view of the islands that most visitors only see from a car window.
Guides speak English, Spanish, German, and Hungarian. The tours work for most experience levels — no previous kayaking or trekking background required for the majority of programs. Groups, couples, families, and solo travelers are all a regular part of the mix.
If nothing in the schedule fits your plans exactly, they take custom requests. A message is usually enough to sort it out.
